Nutritional Support for Intestinal Function
DESCRIPTION
CD Pak™, provided by Douglas Laboratories, is a comprehensive dietary supplementation program in two daily packets, each containing 3 Basic Preventive ® 5 multiple vitamin/mineral tablets, 1 Caprylex™ tablet, 1 Bio-dophilus™ capsule, 1 Evening Primrose Oil softgel, and 1 Marine Fish Oil softgel. All components of CD Pak use only pure, hypoallergenic ingredients, and contain no yeast; wheat; sugar or other sweeteners; artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.
FUNCTIONS
In healthy people, the intestinal microflora contains balanced amounts of symbiotic microorganisms providing nutritional benefits to the host. This balance depends on dietary habits and can be easily disturbed by unhealthy diets or drugs, such as antibiotics and oral contraceptives. Under these conditions, opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms, such as the fungus Candida albicans, can colonize the small and large intestine. CD Pak is formulated to supply significant amounts of key dietary factors to support a healthy balance of symbiotic intestinal microorganisms and to maintain normal intestinal immune defenses against pathogenic microorganisms.
Basic Preventive ® 5 is a comprehensive, highly concentrated vitamin-mineral-trace element supplement containing more than 30 essential nutrients and cofactors. Basic Preventive 5 essentially combines four formulas in one: a potent antioxidant formula rich in natural beta-carotene (from D. salina), vitamin C and natural vitamin E; a high-potency B-complex supplement; a significant source of bioavailable calcium and magnesium; and a full-spectrum trace element supplement, providing zinc, copper, chromium and selenium.
Caprylex™ tablets are specially formulated to provide controlled release of caprylic acid throughout the small and large intestine. Caprylic acid, commonly found in foods (coconut oil, milk fat, etc.), is a natural dietary fatty acid which helps maintain normal intestinal microflora. Studies have shown that dietary caprylic acid helps control the spread of Candida albicans and other opportunistic fungi in both the small and large intestine. At the same time, caprylic acid does not adversely affect the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria. Two daily packets of CD Pak provide 800 mg of calcium magnesium caprylate complex which is equivalent to 600 mg of caprylic acid.
Bio-dophilus™ is a highly concentrated combination of the beneficial intestinal microorganisms Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei subsp. Rhamnosus. Each 280 mg capsule contains 2.8 billion viable microorganisms. Bio-dophilus is enteric coated with inert cellulose. This prevents dissolution in the stomach, thus protecting the microorganisms from the damaging effects of stomach acid and ensures effective release in the intestine where the beneficial microorganisms are able to survive and colonize. Lactobacilli help create an acidic environment in the lower intestine which promotes the growth of other beneficial bacteria and help suppress the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Two daily packets of CD Pak provide two capsules of Bio-dophilus, or 5.6 billion viable microorganisms. Evening Primrose Oil softgels (500 mg) provide 50 mg of the nutritionally important gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and 360 mg of the essential linoleic acid. GLA is an important nutritional factor in maintaining a normal immune response to infections such as Candida albicans and others. GLA may help downregulate the formation of excessive levels of pro-inflammatory 2-series prostaglandins and other immune mediators. Two daily packets of CD Pak provide 1,000 mg of evening primrose oil containing 100 mg of GLA and 720 mg of linoleic acid.
Marine Fish Oil is a source of the omega-3
polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
and DHA (docosa-hexaenoic acid). These fatty acids
help maintain normal immune function and there is
evidence of synergistic effects with GLA. Typical diets
often deliver high levels of arachidonic and linoleic
acids which have proinflammatory effects. The omega-3
fatty acids EPA and DHA provide a natural
counterbalance because they serve as precursors for the
anti-inflammatory prostaglandins E1 and E3. Two
